Introduction
Welcome to the Victoria Falls. [Victoria Falls, abbrev. VF]
A visit to VF has an ever-lasting impact. It's kind of an addiction and I have an unflinching passion about this beautiful city, country and its people.
If you’re one to have the “bucket list” phenomena, then VF is clearly the place you need to visit and should top your list.
About my background. I was born in Zimbabwe formerly known as Rhodesia and grew up with my family until we decided to emigrate to South Africa. I now reside in sunny UK…
We never got a chance to visit Victoria Falls when living in Zimbabwe and I think it's that thing that often when you live in your own birth country you always want to travel outside and or abroad. Our school vacations from Zimbabwe we're mainly traveling to the beach in Durban South Africa or to Beira Mozambique, formally Lourenço Marques.
My first trip to the falls was in 1994 so this year marks the 31th anniversary. I've subsequently returned to the falls on 13 occasions.
Things haven’t changed that much in VF from 1994 and it still holds its beauty and offers an amazing experience, and a great holiday. There's always something new that I haven't explored previously. Whether it's a new, best photographic angle of the falls, an adventure into a Township, or something new to the menu in one of the fantastic restaurants or hotels, I just find it intriguing.
The objective of this book is to promote a natural interest in the history of VF and how it is now days. Hence the title “Bridging Past & Present”.
This is not guide but an arrangement of some of the history of VF and my experiences incorporating some amazing views of the falls, the mighty Zambezi and details of the great people, art and culture and some of the superb hospitality establishments.
Like comfort food, it's a comfort read. It's a reference with some basic facts when visiting for the first time or if you're planning a return visit.
And unlike some written editions released of the VF this century, there’s some interesting events that have had little exposure which I’ve included and… a brief interview I managed to secure with one of the earlier settlers’ surviving siblings.
